Qld: Doctors prescribing abortion drug assured
The Queensland government has moved to assure doctors prescribing the controversial
abortion drug RU486 .. they won't be contravening the state criminal code.
Ten days ago .. two Queensland gynaecologists became the first doctors in Australia
granted authority by the Therapeutic Goods Administration to prescribe the drug.
But the Australian Medical Association of Queensland's questioned whether the doctors
would be acting illegally if they prescribe it.
Premier PETER BEATTIE says following Crown legal advice .. doctors prescribing RU486
under TGA authority .. won't face prosecution.
The drug was the subject of an emotional debate earlier this year when federal parliament
agreed to strip Health Minister TONY ABBOTT of his power to veto its use .. giving approval
to the TGA to do so.
