Fed: Australians don't know the G-G's name

A Newspoll shows that just two per cent of Australians can correctly name the nation's
Governor-General, MICHAEL JEFFERY.

The poll found a further five per cent mentioned the name JEFFERY, but 87 per cent
of people have admitted they did not know who the current Governor-General was.

And the Newspoll has found even monarchists are unable to name the Queen's representative,
with just one per cent able to recall his name in full and a further six per cent aware
of his surname.

The survey in today's Daily Telegraph says Major-General JEFFERY'S low recognition
follows an apparent usurping of the Governor-General's duties by Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD.

The Telegraph says Mr HOWARD took on the official ceremonial role at the Rugby World Cup.

And unlike Maj-Gen JEFFERY, Mr HOWARD maintained a high profile in marking the first
anniversary of the Bali bombings.

Maj-Gen JEFFERY'S official secretary MALCOLM HAZELL has told the paper he's not surprised
by the poll and his boss's profile will increase in time.
