NSW:Work begins to rid Hawkesbury of salvinia weed
Work has begun to rid a major waterway north west of Sydney of a 40-kilometre long
blanket of fast-growing South American weed.
An aquatic weed harvester is working on the Hawkesbury River to clear it of the suffocating
weed known as salvinia.
JOHN KLEM, chairman of the Hawkesbury Nepean Catchment Management Authority, says the
weed has now spread from the Penrith Weir to Wisemans Ferry.
He says the weed is creating all sorts of difficulties and water ski parks are suffering
because people aren't using the river.
